Thunder 125, Suns 114 · Oklahoma City is 4-0

KEY FACTS 📊

  • Jalen Williams (OKC): fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle, needs surgery, no timetable

  • Cason Wallace (OKC): torn labrum in his left shoulder, needs surgery, no timetable

  • Alex Caruso (OKC): right ankle sprain Monday, did not return, no timeline given

  • Chet Holmgren (OKC): missed Monday with patellar tendinitis in his right knee

  • Ajay Mitchell (OKC): career-high 30 points in Williams' starting spot

THE STORY 🗞️

OKLAHOMA CITY. The Thunder lost two starters on Sunday night. By Monday they knew both would need surgery.

General manager Sam Presti said Jalen Williams fractured his left fibula and dislocated his left ankle, and Cason Wallace tore the labrum in his left shoulder. Presti gave no timetable for either player and said return dates will be set after the operations. Both injuries usually take months of rehab, which puts most or all of their season in doubt.

Williams went down with 1:14 left in Sunday's 108-101 win over the Clippers, landing awkwardly on a drive. The game was stopped for about five minutes, and he was taken off on a stretcher. He gave the home crowd two thumbs-up on the way out.

It is another blow for a player who has had little luck with his body. Williams, 25, was an All-Star and All-NBA pick two seasons ago, but wrist surgery and recurring hamstring strains limited him to 33 regular-season games last season.

THE NEXT NIGHT 💪

Oklahoma City had to play again 24 hours later, and the injury list kept growing. Holmgren sat out with knee tendinitis, and Caruso sprained his right ankle late in the second quarter after colliding with Dillon Brooks. He scored 9 points in 9 minutes before he left.

The Thunder won anyway, 125-114 over Phoenix. Mitchell started for Williams and scored a career-high 30. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 26, Jared McCain had 18 in Wallace's spot, and Isaiah Hartenstein put up 15 points and 13 rebounds.

ELSEWHERE: KAWHI OUT AT LEAST A WEEK 🩹

Toronto has its own problem. The Raptors said Tuesday that Kawhi Leonard has swelling in his left knee and will be re-evaluated in one week. Imaging showed no acute injury, and he will go through a treatment and rehab program.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Leonard is expected to miss weeks. He was a late scratch in Sunday's 117-94 loss at Minnesota and had averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in his first two games. Toronto plays Orlando twice this week.

OUR TAKE 🐶

Losing Williams is the big one. He is the second creator next to Gilgeous-Alexander, and the Thunder do not have another wing who can do what he does on both ends.

Monday showed they still have depth, but depth gets tested over 78 more games. If Caruso and Holmgren miss time too, this roster will be thin on the defensive end, where Oklahoma City usually wins its games.
