Brewers 4, Rays 1 · Milwaukee wins the series 4-1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday night and closed out the series 4-1 at Tropicana Field.

A day earlier the Rays had extended the series with a 12-inning win in Game 4. There was no second escape. Milwaukee led 4-0 before Tampa Bay got on the board, and the bullpen never gave the Rays a real opening.

Tampa Bay is still waiting too. The Rays have now been to four World Series and lost all four.

Jacob Misiorowski started Game 1 and Game 5, and won both. On Wednesday he took a shutout into the sixth inning and left with a 4-0 lead after his right calf cramped up.

The relievers covered the last 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run. That has been the story of Milwaukee's October. Aaron Ashby finished the postseason with 18 consecutive scoreless innings, a record.

Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt kept hitting, too. He had six straight hits across Games 4 and 5, one night after his extra-inning home run nearly won Game 4.

The celebration had a name attached to it. Bob Uecker, the voice of the Brewers for decades, never got to see his team win a World Series, and Christian Yelich made sure he was part of the night.

This was a 114-win team once the playoffs are counted, and it went 11-2 in October. Along the way the Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, the two-time defending champions.

USA TODAY noted the roster has watched stars and executives come and go over the years. This group finished the job anyway.

Milwaukee was the best team in baseball and played like it when it counted. Sweeping the Dodgers and then taking four of five from a Rays team that refused to fold is a real title run.

Misiorowski bookended the series and the bullpen did the rest. That formula will be hard to copy, and every contender will try.
