THE STORY 🗞️

CHICAGO. The Bears made the boldest move of the trade season on Thursday, acquiring All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Titans for two first-round picks.

Chicago sends its 2027 and 2028 first-rounders and a 2027 fourth-round pick to Tennessee. The Bears also get a 2028 fifth back. Simmons is the first defensive tackle since the common draft era began in 1967 to be traded for multiple first-round picks, according to ESPN Research.

He is worth the price on paper. Simmons, 29, was a First-Team All-Pro last season with a career-high 11 sacks, and this year he leads all defensive tackles with 28 pressures, per Next Gen Stats via the Associated Press.

WHY TENNESSEE SAID YES 🤝

Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi said he never planned to move Simmons. That changed with a late call on Wednesday from Bears GM Ryan Poles, whom he knew from their time with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Coach Robert Saleh put it more bluntly, pointing at a 1-6 record: teams start fishing, and "eventually a team threw a hook big enough that I don't think any of us could have said no to," he said, via ESPN.

WHAT CHICAGO GETS 🐻

The Bears needed help up front. Their standard four-man rush has produced a 25 percent pressure rate over the last two seasons, fourth lowest in the league, according to ESPN. Simmons is the kind of interior rusher who changes that number on his own.

OUR TAKE 🐶

Two firsts is a lot, but the Bears are 5-2 and their picks should land late in each round if this works. With Caleb Williams and a young core on rookie deals, this is the window to spend.

For Tennessee, it is the right call at 1-6. Two first-round picks for a 29-year-old is a rebuild handed to them.
