THE STORY 🗞️
FLEETWOOD, England. Fleetwood Town sit 18th in League Two. On Tuesday night they knocked the Premier League champions out of the Carabao Cup.
The fourth-tier side drew 1-1 with Arsenal at Highbury Stadium and then scored all five of their penalties to win the shootout 5-3. It puts Fleetwood in the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time, and Sky Sports' Paul Merson called it the biggest shock in the competition's history.
The night started strangely. A drone over the ground caused a seven-minute delay after 90 seconds. Then, in the 21st minute, Aaron Loupalo-Bi muscled past 17-year-old defender Marli Salmon and poked the ball through Illan Meslier's legs.
Arsenal equalised five minutes into the second half. Viktor Gyokeres bundled in his first goal of the season at the back post. Mikel Arteta brought on Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Bruno Guimaraes and Eberechi Eze, and Arsenal finished with 26 shots to Fleetwood's three.
THE SHOOTOUT 🧤
Teenager Max Dowman was sent off late for kicking out at Harrison Neal, a call Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe described as "really harsh". Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch had already denied White and Odegaard in stoppage time.
In the shootout, Lynch saved from Guimaraes. That left 19-year-old centre-back Conor Haughey to beat Meslier and send Highbury wild. Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor admitted afterwards that none of it was planned.
"I'm going to be honest, we haven't practised once. I'm not going to blag that we had some meticulous penalties, we haven't."
Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor, to Sky Sports
Does it change the title race?
No. Manchester City and Arsenal are level on 21 points at the top of the Premier League, with City ahead on goal difference (+11 to +8). Brighton are third on 16 and Liverpool fourth on 15.
City host Brighton in the league on Saturday, and Arsenal go to Anfield on Sunday.
ELSEWHERE: KANE WINS THE BALLON D'OR 🏆
Harry Kane won the men's Ballon d'Or at the London Palladium on Monday night, ahead of Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal. He is the first English winner since Michael Owen in 2001 and the first Bayern Munich player to win it since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Kane scored 73 goals for Bayern and England last season, including 61 for his club. Alexia Putellas won the women's award for the third time.
"I'm almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special."

OUR TAKE 🐶
Arteta rotated, and he will take criticism for it, but Arsenal still had Gyokeres, Havertz and later Odegaard on the pitch. They had 26 shots and found one goal against a team fighting relegation from League Two.
For Fleetwood, this is the best night in the club's history. A League Two side that did not practise penalties scored five perfect ones against the champions.
