Cities Are Running Out of Salt Before Winter Even Starts

Road salt is one of those things nobody thinks about until plow trucks come back empty, and this year that's happening before the first snowfall. Some cities haven't gotten a single bid for winter supply, while others are paying nearly double last year's price.

North America doesn't mine enough of its own, which is why it ships in 8 to 10 million tonnes from places like Egypt and Chile, two weeks away by boat.

Atlas Salt (TSXV: SALT | OTCQX: SALQF) is building a mine in Newfoundland near a deepwater port where ships can reach Boston in three days. With salt, the real cost is in shipping, and CEO Nolan Peterson says the difference is so big that overseas producers could give their salt away and still come out more expensive than Atlas. The project is shovel-ready and projected to generate roughly C$188 million a year in free cash flow.

NFL · WEEK 9 NOTEBOOK

KEY STATS 📊

  • Fagnano on Sunday: 10 of 21, 91 yards, 1 INT in relief at Buffalo

  • History: second undrafted rookie QB to start for Baltimore, after Anthony Brown in 2022

  • Ravens: 4-4, on a three-game losing streak

  • Jaguars: 5-2

  • Commanders IR: Daron Payne (season), Javon Kinlaw, Jeremy McNichols

  • Trade deadline: Tuesday 10 November, 4 PM ET

THE STORY 🗞️

With Lamar Jackson hurting his right thumb one snap into his return on Sunday and Tyler Huntley out with a toe injury, Jesse Minter confirmed on Tuesday that Fagnano starts against Jacksonville. It will be his first NFL start.

He is banged up too. Fagnano took a low hit from Ed Oliver in Buffalo and practiced Tuesday with his right ankle heavily taped, but he was a full participant. Kedon Slovis, claimed from Green Bay's practice squad, is the backup, with Austin Reed back on the practice squad.

❝

"He's cool, calm and collected; doesn't really get rattled, has a really good demeanor, played in a bunch of games in college. So, you certainly feel good about it."

Kicker Tyler Loop went on injured reserve, so Jake Moody kicks Thursday. Jaguars leading rusher Bhayshul Tuten (foot) did not practice Tuesday.

AROUND THE LEAGUE 📋

Commanders: Washington put defensive tackles Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw and running back Jeremy McNichols on injured reserve. Payne is out for the season. The team claimed running back Robert Henry Jr. off waivers from Seattle.

Rams: Matthew Stafford is dealing with soreness in his throwing arm ahead of Sunday's game against Washington. Los Angeles also put Dean Connors on injured reserve with a broken hand and waived returner Alex Bachman.

Giants: Cam Skattebo is day to day with hamstring tightness, per John Harbaugh. With Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve, Devin Singletary and undrafted rookie Gregory Desrosiers are the only healthy backs on the 53. Eric Gray is back on the practice squad. The Giants (4-2-1) play at Philadelphia on Sunday and host Washington on Thursday.

OUR TAKE 🐶

Baltimore is asking a rookie on a taped ankle to stop a three-game slide on a short week. Expect a run-heavy plan and a lot of pressure on the defense. If it goes badly, the trade deadline a week away gets more interesting.
