Kansas City had the ball at the Denver 4 with 35 seconds left, down four, with Patrick Mahomes under center. Five plays later the Chiefs had zero points and the Broncos had first place in the AFC West.

The sequence went like this. Pat Surtain II stopped Walker at the 1. Mahomes threw incomplete. Walker got stuffed again, this time by Skinner. Mahomes then appeared to hit Rice for the go-ahead touchdown, but a Jaylon Moore false start wiped it out and pushed the Chiefs back to the 6. On the final snap, Roach sacked Mahomes and the game was over.

Denver should never have been in position to make the stand. The Broncos trailed 24-13 in the fourth quarter. Nix found Adkins for a 2-yard touchdown and Waddle caught the two-point conversion to make it 24-21. Harrison Butker then missed from 54, and Nix hit Coleman for 51 yards. Coleman then scored from the 5 to finish a drive that took 35 seconds.

The numbers on Kansas City's side are the strange part. Mahomes is now 80-3 when leading by double digits in the fourth quarter, and this was one of the three. The Chiefs have lost two straight, and the season series is split 1-1.

Denver has now won 15 straight one-score games. Nix's 15th game-winning drive moved him past Dak Prescott for the most by a quarterback in his first three seasons since the merger, and the win was the 200th of Payton's career. Mike McGlinchey summed up the sideline mood: "I did say a few Hail Marys."

Fifteen one-score wins in a row stops looking like luck at some point. Denver's offense was not good for most of this game, but this team keeps finding a way in the final minutes, and the defense finished it against the best quarterback in the sport.

For Kansas City, the false start is the play that will sting. It turned a touchdown into a 6-yard problem, and Denver's front ate up the rest.
